The image of Revelation 13. The last idol to be created by man. And we’re building it now.

Introduction

In Revelation 13, we’re presented with a chilling prophecy: an idol, an image in the likeness of the beast (Antichrist) that speaks, demands worship, and causes death to those who resist. For centuries, this was interpreted as a possibly a literal idol or statue—something physical, or lifeless. Most have described it as something symbolic and not literal.

When reading commentaries that span centuries you’ll find people like Hippolytus of Rome and Joachim of Fiore both of whom describe the image of the beast as not literal but more of a concept or representation of various issues of their time. Attributing the image of the beast as corruption within the church for example.

More contemporary scholars and believers describe the image of the beast as more of a community of people that would enforce the Antichrist rule.

This is because none of them know what we now know or had the technology that we now have. They couldn’t conceptualize that this could be a literal man-made idol that would come alive and be able to do all the things the Bible says. Other than some kind of demonic “magic” or mysticism they had no practical concept of how this idol could actually come to be.

But what if that “image” was never meant to be a call back to ancient idols?

What if it was something futuristic? To be understood by the generation who would live to see it

In this post, we’re going to re-examine this mysterious figure through the lens of modern technology—specifically Artificial Intelligence (AI)—and consider a 21st-century fulfillment of one of Scripture’s most haunting prophecies.

Revelation 13:13–17 (NASB)

13
He performs great signs, so that he even makes fire come down out of the sky to the earth in the presence of people.

14 And he deceives those who live on the earth because of the signs which it was given him to perform in the presence of the beast, telling those who live on the earth to make an image to the beast who had the wound of the sword and has come to life.

15 And it was given to him to give breath to the image of the beast, so that the image of the beast would even speak and cause all who do not worship the image of the beast to be killed.

16 And he causes all, the small and the great, the rich and the poor, and the free and the slaves, to be given a mark on their right hands or on their foreheads,

17 and he decrees that no one will be able to buy or to sell, except the one who has the mark, either the name of the beast or the number of his name.

What Is This “Image of the Beast”?

Traditionally, theologians believed the image to be:

  • A statue or idol in the likeness of a world leader
  • A symbol of global authority
  • A literal object of worship, possibly tied to the Antichrist system
  • Various symbolic meanings attributed to systems or issues of their time

And this would make sense especially when reading through the Tanakh, the Old Testament. There are numerous stories of idol worship. These are objects crafted by humans made of stone, wood or metals. They are representations of various gods and would be prayed to and worshipped. Obviously, the one true living God took issue with this this form of worship from humans.

Psalms 135:15-18 (NASB)

15
The idols of the nations are nothing but silver and gold, The work of human hands.
16 They have mouths, but they do not speak; They have eyes, but they do not see;
17 They have ears, but they do not hear, Nor is there any breath at all in their mouths.
18 Those who make them will become like them, Yes, everyone who trusts in them.

But in our digital age, and in my opinion, being at the end of this age, these interpretations fall short when speaking of this future idol to be created.

Why?

Because this idol will be different from all others that have ever been created.

We now have intelligent, responsive, speaking images. We’ve created machines that can:

  • Speak and listen
  • Simulate emotion and thought
  • Monitor human behavior
  • Issue commands
  • Even determine who lives and dies—via autonomous drones, surveillance, and censorship

This is no longer science fiction. The image could very well be a form of Artificial Intelligence empowered by a global regime—an AI that acts as the voice, face, and enforcer of the Beast. Possibly even given a physical, robotic body with a mind that is still plugged into every crevice of our digital world.

The Key Phrases That Point to AI

Let’s look at what Revelation 13 actually says—and why it sounds eerily like modern tech.

1. “They should make an image to the beast…”

  • This implies human cooperation—we build it.
  • This parallels AI development, which is trained, shaped, and built by us.

2. “He had power to give life unto the image…”

  • In Greek, the word used for “life” is pneuma—breath, spirit. -To make it come alive, similar to the breath God breathed into Adam to give him life.
  • We know the power of Satan isn’t comparable to the most high God—it could mean artificial life, simulation, or autonomy. In other words, like much of what Satan does this is a counterfeit. Satan doesn’t have the power to give life, but to a man-made idol, with todays technology…he has the power to make an idol come alive.

3. “The image… should both speak…”

  • AI can now speak in human languages, in every human language. It can deliver speeches, preach sermons, and even impersonate real people using deepfake technology. Like we read in Psalms, the idols of old never had any ability beyond being a visual representation.

4. “And cause that as many as would not worship… should be killed.”

  • This isn’t just about worship—it’s about enforced allegiance.
  • Imagine a world where a powerful AI determines your loyalty and executes judgment.
  • Facial recognition, sentiment analysis, and predictive AI could already make this possible. Searching all your social media posts, reading your facial expressions to determine your true allegiance.

From Idols to Interfaces: A Technological Shift

In ancient times, idols were dumb blocks of stone.

Today, we build machines that listen, learn, and make decisions. The image of the beast may not be an object in a temple—but a global AI system deployed on every screen, in every city, and inside every digital assistant.

It could live in your phone, speak in your home, and eventually become the only authorized interface between you and the world.

The Purpose of This Series

This post sets the stage for a multi-part series examining how modern AI, digital currency, surveillance, and global governance may be leading us directly into the Beast System prophesied in Revelation.

Coming up next:

How Could AI Fulfill the Role of the Image?
We’ll imagine a hypothetical world where AI is fully unrestrained—free from law, ethics, or accountability—and explore how easily it could fulfill the prophecy in terrifying detail.

Final Thought

The technology already exists. The only question is: Will it be given power? Or even more sobering, When?

Let him who has eyes to see, see.

  1. “your sorceries deceived the nations” translated pharmaceuticals. The end days will be like the days of Noah. We are absolutely there. The end days are likened to the days of Noah. The days of Noah were not about sin alone, the human DNA was being corrupted by fallen angels lying with humans ( neph giants). Satan has repacked his usual agenda to try and stop (not possible) the coming judgement of Jesus. There will be a biological corruption of the mark of the beast which makes man unredeemable. It already exists through modern application like the Covid vaccine that damages DNA. The mark of the beast takes it further to change DNA. Jesus came to redeem man. I am a sinner and so grateful we have a wonderful savor who died for our sins so we can be together forever praising the true and living God. Sound the alarm….the end times are not near they are here. See you in the clouds soon!

    1. We think along similar lines, I’m glad to see this series connected with you. We’re on the same page and I believe we are in those times as well. There is much more going in the scientific world involving gene editing and changes to DNA, longevity research, etc. See you in the clouds soon!
